This original painting by Alberta artist Steve R. Mitts titled The Three Graces is composed of six panels within a single unified structure. The front presents Grace, Charm, and Joy, luminous beneath a canopy of trees where goldfinches quietly observe from the upper panel. When opened, the triptych reveals the Graces again, reading, writing, and rehearsing; portrayed at different stages of life. The continuing trees bind the scenes together, reinforcing the work’s central idea: wherever we are in life, we remain students, open, attentive, and ever curious.
Mitts combines contemporary structure with 16th Century Renaissance influences. Using a meticulous layering of acrylic washes and gels, he achieves a textured, stained glass finish. This piece is created on 100-year-old reclaimed grain bin wood, making the material as much a part of the story as the painting itself. Measures 18 x 35 x 3 inches deep, when open it measures 36 x 35 x 1 3/4 inches deep.
