This original painting by Alberta artist Steve R. Mitts was created in 2003, Stained Glass Curtain has been fully reimagined as a fusion of painting and sculpture. Only the solitary violin player remains from the original work, now suspended within three subtle Gothic arches formed by the negative space of the wood. These architectural lines—reminiscent of cathedral leadwork—both divide and unify the composition. The result is a reverent, contemporary design where the musician feels held in light, her music quietly anchoring the entire structure together. Mitts combines contemporary structure with 16th Century Renaissance influences. Using a meticulous layering of acrylic washes and gels, he achieves a textured, stained glass finish. This piece is created on 100-year-old reclaimed grain bin wood, making the material as much a part of the story as the painting itself. Measures 22 x 35 x 1 1/2 inches deep.
