This original painting by Alberta artist Steve R. Mitts painted in 2002, has since been deconstructed and reborn through reclaimed wood. This transformation replaces the "hurried" energy of the past with a grounded, intentional clarity. Inspired by the rhythmic, intersecting lines of gleaners cutting hay, the new structure mirrors the natural geometry of labor. By weaving together segmented materials and aged wood, the piece becomes a layered reflection on harmony—where past and present are joined in a composition of renewed strength.
Mitts combines contemporary structure with 16th Century Renaissance influences. Using a meticulous layering of acrylic washes and gels, he achieves a textured, stained glass finish. This piece is created on 100-year-old reclaimed grain bin wood, making the material as much a part of the story as the painting itself. Measures 26 1/2 x 28 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches deep.
