Alberta artist Steve R. Mitts’ Book of Seasons is a nine-panel polyptych that physically unfolds to reveal an interconnected narrative of time. Each hinged section captures a specific season, blending personal and universal themes of labor, rest, and reflection. Like pages in a storybook, the panels depict characters engaged in the daily rituals—from harvest to winter stillness—that define the rhythmic cycles of life and memory.
Mitts combines contemporary structure with 16th Century Renaissance influences. Using a meticulous layering of acrylic washes and gels, he achieves a textured, stained glass finish. This piece is created on 100-year-old reclaimed grain bin wood, making the material as much a part of the story as the painting itself. Measures 17 x 23 x 3 inches deep, when open it measures 35 1/2 x 23 x 1 1/2 inches deep.
