The Canvas Series
A Study of Mixed Media Collage

This series explores a recycled art by taking Steve's 20+ year old canvas paintings and 100-year-old barn wood – salvaged from Alberta grain silos – and amalgamates them together, creating something new.
Both media – the painted canvases and old grain bin – were obsolete and unusable; seemingly forgotten. They join together in a sculptural collage: an exploration of art and texture.
The canvases were segmented, cropped, and mixed with the reclaimed wood fragments to create a multilayered, recycled concept inspired by Renaissance artwork.
Renaissance Painting by a Canadian Painter
When you look at the acrylic paintings in this series, you feel transported to the past. The masonry layout of salvaged wood fragments, dark colour palette, and visual aesthetic evoke Renaissance themes.
Some of the arched frames feel like the stained glass artwork of cathedrals, while the interlocking blocks and canvas paintings bring a whole new meaning to mixed media collage.

Canadian Painting Rooted in Alberta History
By making use of the recycled wood from the century old grain silos of the Alberta prairies, this series leans on this history of not only Steve’s previous canvas paintings, but also the history of the prairies in western Canada.
