A Curious Read

Acrylic and gel on old wood, Framed 15 x 19 x 1 1/2 inches deep. A Curious Read portrays a young woman absorbed in the quiet intimacy of a book, surrounded by the density of a wooded forest. A Curious Read is a highly dynamic composition, alive with textured planes and angular surfaces. Rather than soften the inherent rigidity of the segmented wood, the natural grain guides the line work, emphasizing the organic contours and history embedded within the material itself. Dominated by warm, rich, and earthy tones, the palette circulates throughout the image, unifying the figure and the forest while blurring the boundary between human presence and the natural world. The result is both grounded and immersive — a quiet moment of reflection held in balance between structure and story.

A Great Willow

Acrylic and gel on canvas and old wood. Framed 20 x 20 x 1 1/2 inches deep. A Great Willow takes on a luminous quality, almost like stained glass from the Middle Ages, revealing both texture and light. At the heart of the composition, a willow tree stretches upward, its presence dividing the scene into intimate vignettes. A young woman is lost in her book, unaware of the fisherman nearby, casting his nets from a quiet boat. On the shoreline, a mother and child watch him with quiet curiosity, while a musician’s shawm drifts through the air, weaving a soft melody that binds these moments together. Each figure, each gesture, becomes part of a subtle story—a meditation on observation, connection, and the gentle rhythm of everyday life.

In the Company of Pheasants

Acrylic and gel on canvas and old wood. Framed. 20 x 28 1/2 x 2 inches deep. Steve has revisited various themes over the years and his "women reading" focus is one that remains constant. There is a quietness to this motif, one that promotes peacefulness and calm while being viewed. This painting introduces a new aspect to the genre, pheasants. With their presence you witness their intrigue in the young woman's activity. They provide a secondary narrative with their quiet interaction.

Plein Air Concerto SOLD

Acrylic and gel on wood and canvas. 21 1/2 x 23 1/2 x 1 3/8 inches, framed. Combining musicians into the painted landscape has long been a fascination of Steve's. With them, an immediate stillness and peaceful presence emerges. Steve works intentionally to create a reflective and tranquil image that evokes peace and serenity. The young musician is not the primary focus of this piece, but rather she blends into the forest, not taking away from the grandeur of the natural geometric shapes and movement of water in the landscape. She is an accompaniment in this composition.

With Reflection

Acrylic and gel on canvas and wood. Framed, 21 x 27 1/2 x 1 7/8 inches deep. This painting takes a deeper look at a previous work titled "Enveloped" and developes the concept further. It takes the smaller "Enveloped" image and portrays her within a full length setting, giving the viewer a larger sense of the forest and landscape.

Soft Meadow

Acrylic and gel on wood. Framed, 10 1/4 x 13 x 1 1/2 inches deep. Finding a quiet place to enjoy a letter is a common theme in many of Steve's paintings. This bright and inviting painting is all about the enjoyment of being in the landscape.

Suonare

Acrylic and gel on canvas and wood. Framed, 18 1/2 x 22 x 1 7/8 inches deep. Suonare is Italian for "To Play." This painting presents a delicate balance between the devotion required to master something and the sheer joy of experiencing it. The flute embodies this perfectly; simple in design, a mouth hole and six finger openings, yet capable- when played with skill, of melting the heart with its whispering, graceful tones. At the heart of the painting is enjoyment. A young woman carries a gentle hint of a smile while remaining fully absorbed and dedicated in the moment. This fleeting emotion, sometimes difficult to capture, is here found in an image of serene and radiant contentment.

Forest Rehearsal

Acrylic and Gel on Canvas and old Wood 30 x37 x 2 1/4 inches deed. Framed. Forest Rehearsal is an invitation to witness a private event. Far from the rigid concert halls and critical ears of the city, these four players have found a clearing where the only judge is the wind, and the only witnesses are the mallards in the stream. There is a weave within the presentation to honor the complexity of the music being played—just as individual threads of wood come together to form a solid image, the individual notes of the flute, violin, and lute intertwine to create a single, fleeting harmony. The weight of the wood reminds us that while music is ethereal, the peace we find in the forest is ancient, heavy, and enduring."

The rough glazed wood and the warmth of the wheat fields, connected with the tones and values in the young woman's face, all tell a story.

Tranquil #4

Prussian Blue

Acrylic and old wood. Framed 12 x 15 x 1 1/4 inches deep. Prussian Blue is part of the Women and Flowers series, where quiet moments are allowed to breathe. Built with heavy gels and countless translucent washes, the surface carries a depth that feels almost weathered by time, as though the image has slowly revealed itself rather than simply been painted. Light drifts across the textures, catching in the ridges and settling into the layers, giving the work a soft inner glow. The woman and the flower exist in a gentle stillness together, a fleeting, intimate exchange; delicate yet grounded, tender yet enduring. The richness of the surface invites the viewer closer, asking not only to be seen, but to be felt.

French Rose

Acrylic and gel on old wood. Framed 12 x 14 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches deep. French Rose from the Women and Flowers Series, this side profile of a young woman holding a rose presents a rich, inviting scene. Her delicate gaze is fixed on the flower, yet the soft curve of her smile hints at stories beyond the frame. Vibrant colors and intricate forms in the background seem to envelop her, wrapping her in a quiet warmth, as if the world itself is offering a gentle embrace. The interplay of the natural textures, the weathered wood fragments, and the lush painted forms creates a dialogue between fragility and strength, stillness and life. Each detail, from the tender bloom to the nuanced expression, invites the viewer into an intimate moment; a reflection on curiosity, beauty, and the quiet power of attention.

Lost in Thought

Acrylic and gel on old wood. Framed 14 1/2 x 12 x 1 1/2 inches deep. Lost in Thought from the Women and Flowers Series, show a woman surrounded by the textured geometry of reclaimed wood, the softness of her profile contrasts with the hard, weathered edges that frame her. The structured fragments press inward, while her expression remains calm and unguarded, creating a gentle tension between strength and sensitivity, permanence and fragility. The flower becomes less an object of focus and more a quiet companion — something present but secondary to the interior world she inhabits. This subtle disconnect lends the scene a contemplative stillness, suggesting reflection rather than admiration. The result is a portrait not simply about beauty or nature, but about introspection — a moment where thought outweighs touch, and the inner life quietly eclipses the visible one.

A Dreamer's Dream

Acrylic and gel on canvas and old wood. 19 3/4 x21 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches deep, framed. A Dreamer’s Dream carries with it an elevated humbleness and a quiet, weighty dignity; the presence of someone who has seen much and remains steadfast. Her gaze feels reflective rather than fragile, grounded in experience, as though time itself has shaped her character. Within this balance of roughness and grace, the work becomes less a portrait and more a story; one of resilience, shelter, and stillness. Strength does not announce itself here; it rests quietly beneath the surface. She remains poised between enclosure and openness, as if suspended in a moment of contemplation, inviting the viewer to slow down, lean closer, and listen.
